How we do it

Measure the room, not the wall
Rooms are rarely square. We measure and cut to what is actually there rather than to what the plan says.

Cope the inside corners
Inside corners get coped, not mitered. A miter opens up as the house moves through the seasons; a coped joint stays tight.

Scarf the long runs
Where a wall is longer than a stick of trim, the joint is cut at an angle over a stud so it disappears instead of showing as a seam.

Fasten into framing
Nails go into studs and plates. Trim held on by drywall alone is what you're calling us about in the first place.

Caulk, fill and sand
Caulk the wall line, fill the nail holes, sand it flat. This is most of what makes trim look professionally done.
Questions worth asking
- Can you match the trim profile I already have?
- Usually. Send a photo of the end profile — a side-on shot of a cut end tells us more than a picture of the whole wall. Older or custom profiles sometimes have to be built up from two pieces.
- Paint-grade or stain-grade?
- Both. Stain-grade costs more in material and takes longer, because every joint has to be tight enough to survive without caulk hiding it.
- How long does a room take?
- Baseboard in an average room is typically a day including caulk and fill. Crown takes longer — the corners are the work.
