Tile and backsplash in the Grand Rapids area
Kitchen backsplashes, shower surrounds, floor tile and regrouting.
What usually goes wrong
- Cracked or loose tiles
- Grout that's crumbling or stained beyond cleaning
- Moldy caulk in the corners of a shower
- A backsplash that dates the whole kitchen
- Tiles that sound hollow when you tap them
A kitchen floor we did
Laid running bond rather than stacked, so the joints do not line up down the length of the room and a slightly out-of-square wall stops being obvious.
What this covers
- Kitchen backsplash
- Shower surrounds
- Floor tile
- Regrouting and recaulking
How we do it
-
Check what is behind it
Hollow-sounding or loose tile usually means the substrate has failed. Re-tiling over a bad substrate fails again, so we look before we quote.
-
Waterproof anything that gets wet
Showers and tub surrounds get proper backer board and waterproofing. Drywall behind tile in a wet area is why so many bathrooms get retiled twice.
-
Lay out from the center
We plan the layout so you don't end up with a sliver of tile in the most visible corner.
-
Grout, then caulk the changes of plane
Corners and the joint where wall meets tub get caulk, not grout. Grout in those spots cracks — it's the single most common tiling mistake.
Questions worth asking
- Can you just regrout instead of retiling?
- If the tiles are sound and it's only the grout that has gone, yes, and it costs a fraction. If tiles are loose, regrouting is a temporary fix and we'll say so.
- How long does a kitchen backsplash take?
- Typically two days — one to set the tile, one to grout after the adhesive has cured. Rushing the cure is how tiles shift.
- Can you match tile I already have?
- Send a photo and any spares you have. Discontinued tile is genuinely hard to match, and we'd rather tell you that at the quote than halfway through.
What it costs
Every job is priced on its own. Text or email a photo of what you're looking at and we can usually give you a number without coming out — for bigger jobs we'll come and see it properly first.
You get the price before we start, not after.
