How we do it
-
Check the hinges before anything else
A surprising number of sticking doors are a loose hinge screw, not a warped door. It's the first thing we look at and sometimes the only thing we fix.
-
Work out whether it's the door or the opening
Houses settle and openings go out of square. That changes the fix from planing the door to shimming the jamb.
-
Adjust the strike, not just the latch
Most latching problems are solved by moving the strike plate a sixteenth of an inch, which is a lot cheaper than a new door.
-
Replace only when replacing is the answer
If the slab is delaminating or the jamb is rotten, we'll say so. If it's repairable, we'd rather repair it.
-
Weatherstrip and sweep on exteriors
On an outside door the draft is usually the seal, not the door. Worth doing before winter.
Questions worth asking
- Repair or replace?
- Repair, if the door is sound. Sticking, latching and draft problems are usually adjustment. We'll tell you when a door is genuinely past it.
- What is the difference between a slab and a prehung door?
- A slab is just the door and reuses your existing frame — cheaper and quicker, but only works if the frame is square and sound. A prehung comes with its own frame and fixes problems a slab can't.
- Can you rekey or change the locks?
- We can install and replace locks, deadbolts and hardware. For rekeying an existing lock you want a locksmith.
What it costs
Every job is priced on its own. Text or email a photo of what you're looking at and we can usually give you a number without coming out — for bigger jobs we'll come and see it properly first.
You get the price before we start, not after.
