How we do it
-
Cut back to something solid
A patch is only as good as what it's fastened to. We cut back to studs or add backing rather than floating a patch over a hole.
-
Find out why, if it keeps cracking
A crack that reopens in the same spot is usually movement, not bad mudding. Worth knowing before you pay to fix it twice.
-
Mud in coats, with drying time
Three thin coats beats one thick one. Each needs to dry properly, which is why a same-day patch is rarely a same-day finish.
-
Match the texture
This is the part that gives away a bad repair. Knockdown, orange peel and smooth all get matched to what is already on the wall.
-
Prime before paint
Fresh mud drinks paint differently to the wall around it. Skipping primer is why patches flash through the finish coat.
Questions worth asking
- How long does a patch take?
- The work is quick; the drying is not. Most repairs are two visits — one to cut, back and coat, one to sand, texture and finish.
- Will the repair be invisible?
- On a flat or lightly textured wall, usually yes. Heavy or unusual textures are harder and we'll tell you up front if we think it'll show.
- Do you paint afterwards?
- Yes. A patch that isn't painted is only half a repair.
- Can you take down a popcorn ceiling?
- Yes — see the note below about older homes first.
What it costs
Every job is priced on its own. Text or email a photo of what you're looking at and we can usually give you a number without coming out — for bigger jobs we'll come and see it properly first.
You get the price before we start, not after.
