Deck and fence repair in the Grand Rapids area

Board replacement, wobbly railings, gate fixes, staining and sealing.

What usually goes wrong

  • Boards that feel soft or springy to walk on
  • A railing that moves when you lean on it
  • Screws and nails backing out of the surface
  • Gray, splintering lumber that used to be brown
  • A gate that has dropped and won't latch
  • Steps that flex more than they should

What this covers

  • Board replacement
  • Railing repair
  • Staining and sealing
  • Gate and fence repair

How we do it

  1. Probe for rot before quoting

Soft boards are the visible part. We check the joists and ledger underneath, because replacing a board over a rotten joist is money wasted.

  2. Start with the railing if it moves

A loose railing is the actual safety issue on most decks. It goes first, regardless of what the deck looks like.

  3. Replace boards and fasteners together

New boards go down with proper exterior fasteners. Reusing old nail holes is how you end up back where you started.

  4. Sand before any finish

Stain on top of gray, weathered lumber doesn't last. The surface has to come back to clean wood first.

  5. Stain or seal when the weather allows

West Michigan gives a real window for this. Too cold or too damp and the finish won't cure properly, so sometimes the honest answer is to wait.

Questions worth asking

Repair or rebuild?
If the frame and posts are sound, repair is usually far cheaper. If the structure has gone, patching the surface is throwing money at it — and we'll say so.
When is the right time to stain?
Dry lumber and mild weather. In Michigan that means late spring through early fall. New pressure-treated lumber also needs to dry out first.
Do you work on composite decking?
Yes, for board replacement and railing work. Matching older composite can be difficult if the line has been discontinued.

What it costs

Every job is priced on its own. Text or email a photo of what you're looking at and we can usually give you a number without coming out — for bigger jobs we'll come and see it properly first.

You get the price before we start, not after.
