How we do it

  1. Find where it actually gets in

    Water runs along the underside of the decking before it drops, so the stain on your ceiling is rarely under the hole. We look from the attic side first and work back uphill.

  2. Check the flashing before the shingles

    Most leaks are not the field of the roof. They are the flashing at a chimney, a valley, or the rubber boot around a vent pipe, which hardens and splits long before the shingles wear out.

  3. Press on the decking

    Soft sheathing means the water has been coming in for a while. New shingles over rotten decking buys a season and wastes the money, so that gets found before anything goes back on.

  4. Tell you when the patch will show

    Shingles fade. A repair on a ten-year-old roof will not match, and you should hear that from us before the work rather than after it.

  5. Say when it is past repairing

    A roof at the end of its life needs a roofer and a tear-off, not a patch. We do the repair; we do not do replacements, and we will tell you which one you have.

Questions worth asking

Do you replace whole roofs?
No. We repair — leaks, flashing, storm damage, a section of shingles. A full tear-off and replacement is a different job and you want a dedicated roofer for it.
Can you price a roof from a photo?
Less often than other jobs. A photo from the ground shows the symptom, not the cause, and the cause is usually somewhere you cannot see from there. Send it anyway — sometimes it is obvious — but expect us to want to look.
Is the stain on my ceiling definitely a leak?
Not always. Condensation from poor attic ventilation makes very similar marks, and so does a plumbing vent. Worth checking before anyone goes on the roof.
Do you handle insurance claims?
No. We will document what we find and what we did, and you can give that to your insurer. Anything beyond that is work for a licensed public adjuster, not for us.
